Why this map
Why this map?
Mind Engine shows you where you stand on one map of the mind: the
Levels of Consciousness (LOC). This page says what the map is, where it comes from,
and how your place on it is set.
What the map is
Seven states, on two sides: the conscious side and the subconscious side. Each
level pairs one state from each side. When both are working, you grow to the state
above.
| Conscious side | Subconscious side | Grows |
|---|
| Level 1 | Calmness | Mental Security | Self Awareness |
| Level 2 | Self Awareness | Wellbeing | Mindfulness |
| Level 3 | Mindfulness | Liveliness | Consciousness |
A block low down costs you what is above it. That is why the map starts where it
does, and why Mind Engine works the level you are on, not the top.
Where it comes from
The map is old. The idea of the mind as a cascade, where steadiness below lets
awareness grow above, runs through the old traditions of inner work. That lineage
is the reason the map has this shape, and not a shape we invented. You can go back
to those sources and read them for yourself. Mind Engine lets you see the same map
in your own life, in your own words.
The research
We wrote the map down as the LOC framework and tested it as research. The paper
measures the functions of a mind in human brain signals (EEG) and inside AI language
models. It is free to read.
What the paper does not say: it does not show that a chat can
measure your level of consciousness. Mind Engine does not measure your brain and
does not give you a score. It reads your own words and shows the place on the map
they point to.
How your place is set
- From your own words. Every place on your map shows the words it stands on, with the date.
- Over more than one day. A place settles when your words show it on two different days, or when you close something you were working on.
- It moves only between visits. One message, or one long talk, cannot move it. When it moves, Mind Engine tells you once, with your words.
- No score. No number, no streak, no count of your visits.
See where you stand
Talk it through, out loud or in writing. Your map fills in as you come back.
